I’ve been fishing from a very young age, but discovered kayak fishing in 2005. I like nothing more than loading my gear into my campervan and disappearing for a few days on the water in search of the next fine specimen.
I mainly fish the rugged Yorkshire East Coast. It has everything you could wish for and the scenery is absolutely outstanding. The fishing here can be some of the best in the country and I like to target Pollock, Cod and Bass using Shads, Jelly worms and Plugs.
Over the last couple of years, I've entered the freshwater scene and target mainly Pike and Perch using lures and the ever popular drop shot style of fishing. Whilst sceptical at first, I have grown to love the fresh stuff and now compete at national events throughout the UK with great success.
The reason I love kayak fishing so much (it's an obsession really!) is one minute you’re sat tranquilly drifting along looking at the birds and wildlife, the next minute you have carnage on the kayak with a good fish across your lap. It gives you such a feeling of freedom and you see things that you wouldn’t from the shore. Kayak fishing is a massive part of my life and I’m proud to be involved with this growing sport.

My mum took me fishing in Scarborough, North Yorkshire when I was about 4 or 5 with a plastic rod and she was really not expecting me to catch anything. That was my first coalfish and I've been an avid fisherman ever since. I first combined it with kayaking when I was about 16 in my scouts old wooden tandem kayak catching mackerel in the bay. I have fished off kayaks of all descriptions over the years and remember in about 1998 asking the then editor of Sea Angler if he'd like an article on bass fishing in Pembrokeshire off kayaks. Whilst supportive the answer was no, they didn't want to encourage dangerous activities, it just shows how much things have changed with both safety and popularity.
With the new breed of SOT kayaks designed for fishing the sport has really taken off, starting on an OK Prowler 13 and then an OK Elite 4:5 I have despite a few forays into other brands and fibreglass/composite kayaks always maintained my love of the Ocean Kayak Brand.
I love the freedom the kayak offers and that you can tailor your fishing to both your available time and mood. From easy launches into sheltered harbours to offshore forays and rugged coastline exploration. The thought that with the inaccessibility from land and the danger of grounding to boats you can fish coves and ledges possibly never fished before.
My favorite species are black bream and bass which are abundant on the south coast and pollock off both the Welsh and Yorkshire coastlines.
I enjoy competitive angling and have managed to win both the Swanage OK Classic and the SWKA Oxwich competitions, with high placings in a number of other events. I follow the UK kayak fishing competition circuit and aim to fish as many comps as possible each year.

I spent many years targeting specimen fish of a wide range of species until I discovered Pike. After the capture of my first Pike, my angling career took a huge turn and I was hooked on predator fishing.
My kayak angling began in early 2014 with the purchase of my first Ocean Kayak Trident 13. After a few sessions, I quickly realised the potential of fishing for specimen predators by having a stealthy approach, using light gear to fish in remote areas of rivers and lakes, often unfishable from the bank.
Fishing from a kayak is the ideal platform for targeting freshwater predators, using a wide range of techniques, from Ultra-light Jigging and Drop-shotting through to Jerkbaits, dead baits and even live bait!
I have had an amazing first year fishing from a Kayak, with notable captures being Perch to 3.8lbs, Pike to double figures, and even a French Catfish.
Throughout the last year, I have been able to compete on the UK Kayak Angling circuit. I have had great experiences of fishing on both freshwater and on the sea, and meeting some fantastic people along the way. I have now got the bug for competitive angling and look forward to competing alongside the Ocean Kayak UK team for many years to come.
It is a real honour to have been invited to become the newest member to the Ocean Kayak UK Fishing Team. I aim to bring my freshwater predator knowledge and experience to the table, and look forward to competing alongside the Ocean Kayak UK Fishing Team.
